Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

FWPSAW4205 - Plan and monitor timber conversion

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Plan timber production from flitches and cants

  1. Review workplace health and safety requirements, environmental protection practices and emergency procedures according to operational requirements
  2. Identify and control hazards and use personal protective equipment according to workplace requirements and health and safety legislation to maintain safe work practices
  3. Assess flitches and cants for types of timber that can be cut and determine the optimal cutting pattern
  4. Plan and document cutting patterns to maximise output and minimise wastage
  5. Develop timber cutting schedules and work orders and brief sawing operators according to workplace procedures
  6. Identify variations in timber characteristics and report to sawing operators

Coordinate sawing operations for timber production

  1. Assist sawing operators to evaluate flitches and cants and sawing problems
  2. Monitor and assess timber cutting processes for the quality of cutting pattern, suitability to flitch or cant condition and ability to maintain production schedule
  3. Modify cutting patterns and production schedule as required to ensure optimum performance, and communicate to sawing operators
  4. Assist sawing operators to reject sub-standard flitches and cants and ensure they are disposed of according to environmental protection practices
  5. Ensure processed timber is directed to a designated area for storage or further processing
  6. Complete and maintain records of cutting output according to workplace procedures
  7. Investigate, record and report major processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel
